FIVE CONDUCTORS SELECTED (02/05/2010)

The Guelph Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is seeking a conductor for the 2011-2012 season and beyond, and the selection process has moved to the point where five guest conductors have been selected to each conduct a concert in the 2010-2011 season. The five conductors are:-

October ( Marriage of Figaro) - Kristian Alexander
December (Christmas Choral Fantasy) - David Bourque
January (Dreams of Vienna) - Michael Newnham
February - (Classic Delights - Brilliant Beethoven) - Evan Mitchell
April (Masterworks: Liszt and Brahms) - Judith Yan

Details of these conductors and the concerts can be found on the descriptions of concerts for the season. The GSO is inviting its audience to participate in the selection process by completing a simple survey form after each concert. These will be collected and considered in the final selection, which will be made after the final concert of the season, in April 2011. Who will be the winner? YOU can take part in the process!

2010 CONCERTO COMPETITION RESULTS(03/05/2010)

The GSO is pleased to announce the winners of its ninth Annual Concerto Competition, which this year was for wind and brass players. The upper age limit is 27 and full details were published on the poster.

The jury, of Jose Molina (concertmaster), Simon Irving (Artistic Director) and Margaret Prime (Flautist) selected two joint winners, Afendi Yusuf (clarinet) and Hugo Lee (oboe). They will both perform at the GSO Feb 20th 2011 concert.

The other finalists were Alberta Brown and Grace Baker, both flautists.

“All the finalists performed well.” said Simon Irving. “We are confident that our audience will enjoy listening to the two players we selected as winners, and all the finalists deserve a lot of credit for their technical skills and artistry.”

CONDUCTOR CHANGES PLANNED (08/06/2009)

Simon Irving, founder and Artistic Director of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, will be redefining his role after the 2009-2010 Season to assume a greater focus on the management of the orchestra. This change will see him becoming Conductor Emeritus and General Manager of the Orchestra in the 2010-2011 season. The search for a new permanent conductor will begin shortly.

Since the Orchestra's formation in 2001, Mr. Irving has filled the demanding dual roles of both Artistic Director and General Manager of the GSO. Under his leadership, the orchestra has enjoyed a remarkable growth expanding from a modest beginning to a 55-player professional-level symphony. Over the past 8 years the orchestra has given 53 concerts, recorded a broadcast-quality CD, brought internationally renowned soloists to the River Run stage, and built a loyal audience and a flourishing group of volunteers and staff. The GSO is now a well-recognized presence in the Guelph performing arts scene, with many memorable performances and strong contacts throughout the community. The orchestra also provides valuable opportunities for young emerging professional performers with its annual Under-23 Concerto Competition.

“Building and nurturing the GSO has been a wonderful experience.” says Irving. “Now it’s time to pass the baton to fresh hands, and I will of course be working to ensure a graceful transition into the appointment of a new permanent conductor in 2011, and the continued success of the orchestra.”

WINNERS OF 2009 CONCERTO COMPETITION (07/06/2009)

The GSO is pleased to announce that the joint winners of the 2009 Competition held on May 2nd are Brian Yoon and Amir Safavi. The astounding young violinist Amir Safavi will perform Max Bruch’s popular Violin Concerto No 1 in the Fall Classic performance on October 25, 2009. Joint winner Brian Yoon performs Dvorak’s magnificent Cello Concerto in Masterworks & More concert under guest conductor Kerry Stratton on April 11, 2010.

In 2002, the GSO initiated the competition to offer talented young musicians the opportunity to perform with a quality orchestra in front of a live audience. Each year a different instrument category is offered – piano, strings and wind. The age was carefully selected to be open to students who are working on or have completed their undergraduate studies. The GSO would like to thank and congratulate all the finalists for their excellent performances.

“It was an amazing afternoon of spectacular music, well performed,” says Simon Irving, GSO Artistic Director and a jury member for the competition. “We were all impressed by the wealth of musical talent, the dedication and accomplishment of these fine young players.”

The finalists were (in performance sequence):
Christopher Hwang - (Guelph) - Schumann Cello Concerto in A
Katya Poplyansky - (Toronto) - Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4
